As Above, So Below: a new artistic residency exploring ocean and ecology
One Ocean Foundation and ZEITGEIST19 launch a transdisciplinary program with artists

One Ocean Foundation and ZEITGEIST19 are delighted to announce a new chapter in their collaboration: a pioneering artistic residency program featuring bio-artist Yoko Shimizu and multidisciplinary artist Antoine Bertin (in partnership with SerenDPT). This initiative is part of the transdisciplinary research project As Above, So Below.

This new endeavor underscores One Ocean Foundation’s deep commitment to art as a powerful tool for communicating ocean values, fostering a cultural dialogue around marine conservation, and promoting the protection of marine ecosystems.

The residency program, conceived by ZEITGEIST19 in collaboration with One Ocean Foundation, is founded on a key principle: to offer artists extended periods of research and foster meaningful interdisciplinary exchange with marine scientists, researchers, and thought leaders.

It focuses on urgent themes such as ocean biodiversity, ecosystem restoration, and the reimagining of our relationship with nature. Through hands-on engagement with ocean research, from the surface to the depths, As Above, So Below transforms scientific inquiry into compelling artistic experiences.

Yoko Shimizu

Yoko Shimizu is a Japanese bio-artist and researcher whose work blends biology, ecology, and sustainability with contemporary art and design.

As part of the residency, Yoko will live and work aboard the ONE catamaran of the M.A.R.E. (Marine Adventure for Research and Education) project in the Mediterranean Sea, off the coast of Greece. There, she will collaborate closely with One Ocean Foundation’s team and marine biologists.

An ambassador for Ars Electronica in Austria, Shimizu is known for her immersive installations that reveal the hidden intelligence and complexity of living systems. Her art makes the invisible visible, engaging the senses to awaken emotional awareness and inspire action for the marine environment. Through multi-sensory experiences, she invites audiences to see, hear, and feel the interconnectedness of life.

Antoine Bertin

Antoine Bertin is a multidisciplinary artist working at the intersection of science and sensory experience. His practice weaves together field recordings, sound storytelling, data sonification, and music composition to create immersive listening experiences and audio meditations exploring our connection with the living world.

During his residency, Antoine will be based at the historic 15th-century church and former convent of Santi Cosma e Damiano—now H3 Factory, an innovation hub founded by SerenDPT (Serenissima Development and Preservation Through Technology) on the island of Giudecca in the Venetian lagoon. H3 Factory is a vibrant ecosystem where scientific research, performance art, and blue economy start-ups come together in creative synergy.

Bertin’s work has been featured at renowned institutions including Tate Britain, Palais de Tokyo, the Serpentine Gallery, and Villa Arson’s Becoming Ocean exhibition during the third UN Ocean Conference (UNOC3). He also hosts the quarterly show Edge of the Forest on NTS Radio, where he combines field recordings, data-driven compositions, and meditative soundscapes inspired by science.
