Ocean Impact Initiative
The first science-based framework designed to address the business impacts on marine ecosystems
The Ocean Impact Initiative has the ambition to be a global science-based framework and methodology aimed at supporting businesses from all industries in taking action on ocean-related issues, promoting prevention and/or mitigation responses and favoring disclosure and reporting.
It aligns with a sustainability risk management approach, incorporates input from multiple stakeholders, and is tailored to meet the needs of sustainable finance. By incorporating its insights into decision-making, investors can drive sustainable business practices and foster long-term environmental stewardship.
The Framework
OII Framework Overview
The OII framework considers three main ocean domains and five fundamental managerial dimensions, which are combined to create an integrated matrix that assesses each managerial dimension across all marine environment domains.
The Ocean Impact Initiative is based on three ocean domains:
Ocean Domain 1
Marine biological integrity and diversity
Ocean Domain 2
Marine water contamination and chemical conditions integrity
Ocean Domain 3
Seawater and/or seabed physical conditions integrity
And on five managerial dimensions:
Business activity
Governance and policies
Role and measurement of ocean pressures
Pressure, dependence, and risk assessment
Managerial activation
Primary sources of information
These domains and dimensions are analyzed through a questionnaire that collects information from self-reported documentation, including:
- Sustainability, integrated and annual reports
- Corporate websites
- Other reports (COP, SBTi...)
Secondary sources of information
Additional data from secondary sources will also be integrated, such as:
- Press releases
- NGO reports
- External databases
- Specialized information retrieval
- Stock exchange filings
- ESG Ratings services
