Healthy marine ecosystems are not only essential for biodiversity: they are also the foundation of local economies.
On 20-21 October, One Ocean Foundation hosted two stakeholder workshops at the Sinis - Isola di Mal di Ventre Marine Protected Area in Sardinia as part of the EU-funded EFFECTIVE Project, in collaboration with CSIC and the MPA management.
On the first day, local fishermen joined us to discuss the pressures affecting fishery resources and habitats. Through a Bow Tie exercise, we explored together the causes, impacts, existing safeguards and possible mitigation measures for both fisheries and marine ecosystems.
On the second day, we welcomed local businesses operating in and around the MPA, including tourism operators, accommodation providers, boat and RIB rental companies, birdwatching activities and fishing tourism businesses. Together, we reflected on how economic activities depend on healthy ecosystems; the pressures they may exert on the natural environment; opportunities to integrate ocean and nature considerations into business decision-making.
Participants also contributed through a questionnaire developed under One Ocean Foundation’s Ocean Impact Initiative Framework, providing valuable information for the project's ongoing work.
A heartfelt thank you to the Municipality of Cabras, the Sinis MPA, and all participants for their hospitality, collaboration and active engagement.
The outcomes of these workshops will be instrumental in shaping the next steps of the EFFECTIVE Project and supporting more sustainable and resilient coastal communities.
